The Environmental Technologies Institute’s ‘Tidal Energy Converter’ (TEC) project was set up to identify ways of providing a cost effective deployment of tidal current technologies on a commercial scale in UK waters.
Working for lead contractors Atlantis, ETA were initially commissioned to provide concept design for a cable connection system to the tethered tidal turbine (floating and mid water) including installation procedures and to conduct a separate study on options for cable designs for fixed tidal devices.
Following this, ETA were contracted for second phase work developing an installation methodology for cable connection between a subsea pod and 4 turbine bases (mini array); the concept design for the cable termination head; and plan for cable protection.
The London Array is an offshore wind farm in the Thames Estuary in the United Kingdom. The 630 MW, 175 turbine, farm is the largest offshore windfarm in the world.
Working for Global Marine Systems Ltd, ETA provided an extensive range of Project Engineering, Consultancy, and Design services for the installation of the inter-array cables.
ETA’s Project Engineering team provided installation procedures; installation storyboards; and mooring pattern drawings. ETA also designed the deck spread for the cable vessel and over saw it’s mobilization; and project managed the mobilisation of MSC Ailsa for PLGR, including spread design, tenders, and vessel procurement.
OJ200-U is an ETA designed and manufactured jet sled; a bespoke modification of ETA’s highly successful Salamander design for Cable Suppliers ABB. The sled itself is equipped with subsea pumps and capable of burial to 3m.
As well as the design and manufacture of the sled itself, ETA were commissioned to provide extensive Project Engineering support during the trials of the sled.
The services ETA provided included the design and mobilization of the trials spread onto the installation vessel, ‘Topaz Installer’, and detailed procedures and support for the trial.
ETA were commissioned by NSW to prepare the detailed installation procedures and task plans for Borkum Riffgrund 1 which was to be installed utilizing their new DP vessel and trencher. The project includes the laying and trenching of two parallel 155 kV AC Sea Cables between the transformer platform for the Offshore Windpark Borkum Riffgrund 1 and the converter platform DolWin Alpha.
The proposed cable route is approximately 12 kms long and the cables are separated by a distance of 100m. The procedures included cable loading and PLGR, ETA also examined the options for route clearance. In addition ETA performed the cable lay and vessel operability analysis.
