As part of ETA’s larger project designing the inter-array cable installation spreads for 3 vessels for use in offshore wind farms ETA also designed a tripping quadrant for use for second end installation.
The quadrant had an MBR of 3 m and allowed the second end cable to be run around the deck to minimise lay past. The quadrant was then designed to run down the deck on rails before going over the chutes and finally laying the cable safely on the seabed during the pull-in. The quadrant had to meet the additional challenge of being slim enough to fit in a tight space below a mezzanine deck. The quadrant has since been re-ordered.
ETA were commissioned to design and manufacture a Cable Abandonment Termination (CAT) for FORCE for use at their tidal test site at the Bay of Fundy in Canada.
The CAT device as delivered by ETA allows cable ends to be laid down for a period ofup to four years, fully sealed to prevent water ingress, and will allow the cables to berecovered at a later date and fitted straight to parent devices by means of a bolted flange connection.
The power cores of the cable are sealed with live end sealing to allow for integrity testingduring the 4 year abandonment period.
When Marine Current Turbines were developing Seagen, a twin rotor tidal turbine operating in up to 30m of water, ETA were commissioned to develop and manufacture the Pitch Control Motors. Each rotor has two blades. The Pitch Control Motors designed by ETA alter the pitch of the blades ensuring optimum energy generation from the turbine.
ETA’s design engineering team produced the overall design and procurement specifications for all items of equipment and interface requirements; and subsequently, the Procurement of main components, fabrication of interfaces and FAT at ETA’s premises in Romsey.
ETA were commissioned by Reef Subsea to design a unique Gantry, and coiling system for the Polar Prince to be used during the infield cable installation at the Gwynt Y Mor wind farm.
Due to the use of a basket cable load strategy, ETA’s design had to meet the unique requirement of being capable of removal and re-installation in a short time window. ETA designed the gantry, powered quadrant, and cone; as well as the dockside seat to be used when the gantry was removed.
The design ETA provided was a great success with removal and reinstallation times well below specified maximums.
